How to Attract a Butterfly: Cockrell Butterfly Center

As I mentioned in my Houston Museum of Natural Science post, the Cockrell Butterfly Center was attached to the main museum building. I suggest visiting the center for an up-close and personal encounter with butterflies…you’ll see why soon!

We entered a dome-shaped greenhouse, very similar to the butterfly house in the St. Louis Zoo. It was larger than the one in St. Louis, however. That only made it all the more exciting to explore!

Queen(s) of camoflage.

Not before long, a butterfly landed on me! It was a super exciting moment since something like this had never happened to me before.

Landed on my elbow!

And then, as if that were not exciting enough, another one joined it!!

It was hard to be still and contain my excitement here 😀

After that, we had to look a little harder to find the butterflies. They blended in oh-so-well with the flowers.

Looking for escape…

But they were easiest to spot when they fed on nectar.

My brother found a pretty blue butterfly:

And then, to my surprise, it also landed on me! Could this day get any better?! Haha!

But there weren’t only butterflies in there.

Anyone know what kind of flower this is? I really like it.

Contrary to what we thought was a chameleon, the Mexican iguana above was naturally two-toned! Males turn orange after adulthood.

I’m sure it’s obvious that I really, really I liked the butterfly center. The special moments when the butterflies landed on me may have had something to do with it! Next time I go to a butterfly house, I’d like to try my hand at identifying them (they usually give you guides). As you can see from the pictures above, the butterflies species were diverse. It’d be cool if I could eventually name them by sight!
