Field of Light

And to think I nearly passed this up because we were tired, it was far from our hotel, it was too late, etcetera, etcetera. Boy am I glad that Lilly had the “we’re here anyway” mentality, so we might as well drive the 20 minutes out to Discovery Green to see Bruce Munro’s Field of Light. It quickly became one of my favorite destinations on our Texas road trip.

Don’t we make a great Christmas card or what?

On a side note, I spotted a pair of wings not too far from the Field.

You choose whether you want to be an angel…

Back to the installation – it begged the question: why? Why are these bulbs on sticks here?

“Munro originally conceived the idea for Field of Light in 1992 during a trip through the red desert of central Australia, when he sketched a landscape of illuminated stems that would wait like dormant seeds in a dry desert, to bloom at night. The idea remained in his sketchbook until 2004, when he finally had space and resources to execute it.” (Discovery Green)

And there they are, at full bloom, at night.
The one, clear shot of my brother amidst the field.

The field was magical, ethereal, fragile, and a host of other descriptions that words cannot use to describe art. Its website mentioned the artist’s installations employ light to “evoke emotional response;” I think it did just that quite successfully.

What do you think?

Thanks for reading!

P.S. Thank you Kara for this recommendation. I, too, highly recommend seeing this in person!
