Murals of Deep Ellum

My first time walking through the Deep Ellum neighborhood was on the way to eat BBQ (@ Pecan Lodge, 10/10 would eat again). One of my coworkers told me that I seemed amazed at everything, which pretty accurately described me as I oggled at the awesome murals on the buildings all around me. I knew that at some point I had to return to this neighborhood to snap proper pictures!

So a couple of weeks ago, I dragged Christina back to Deep Ellum with me. In addition to a few familiar murals, I also discovered tons of new ones:

Saw this on the way to Pecan Lodge and knew I wanted a pic in front of it later. I mean, how could you resist standing in front of an insect fairy spreading her wings while riding her demonic-looking pet? I thought so.

A lot of the art had the artist’s Instagram and Facebook handles sprayed on. I guess that’s the new way of signing your work now. I’d really like to know if there was some kind of event where they invited artists to draw on these walls? Because these look legit – definitely not graffiti randomly sprayed on there.

This one was one of my favorites:

I really like hidden faces in things. And I really like the expression on this face. The colors are also quite pleasing, you think?

Then right next to it was this, which another close favorite:

Some work still in progress…

This one drew me in with its beautiful combination of colors. That turquoise though!
I know it’s not a mural, but this fire station’s complimentary colors were too perfect to pass up.

I’m also fascinated by how art can give character and new life to an area that looks in shambles. Like this, for example:

I’ve become interested in urban photography since living in St. Louis. Anyone in Dallas know of good places?

Moar faces!!

I kept on wandering back to this mural, trying to take a better shot. I loved the colors and desert-y vibe. But with all the cars in the lot, this was the best shot I could do.

Now this is quite the epic depiction of a Dallas-pocalypse in the hands of robot aliens.

Hell yes to all this color!

We were eventually joined by Vicky and Jeremy, who also unwittingly became my model:

Don’t know what waits in The Sunshine Store, but next time I’ll have to go in and find out…

Of course you can find a tribute to our wonderful state no matter where you go:

WOW. I just noticed that “Texas” is spelled out within the flag!! So meta.

Where else have you seen really cool graffiti?

Thanks for reading!
